Hens and Chicks

This is the flower of a plant in our backyard rock garden with the Latin species name of “Sempervivum”, or more commonly Hens and Chicks. The plant itself is a low ground cover but every 2-3 years it sends up 12”-18″ spikes with clusters of these one to two inch flowers at the top. I was struck the by the “alien” look of these flowers and how much detail is present in a flower so small.
